Design Panel restored rooms
The element with the most impact in a kitchen is usually the cabinetry. It sets the tone and style for the whole room. Nikki feels that the kitchen is dark and drab, so that is where I would focus my attention. The counters and flooring appear to be in good condition and are neutral so that they will go with anything. If it is not in the budget to replace the cabinets, then painting them is the way to go. Right now the darkness of the cabinets contrasts with the white appliances and counters to make the room feel stark. I would recommend a light gray, Nantucket Mist F15-4, on the walls and a darker warm gray such as Sheet Metal F15-2 for the cabinets. Bring in some pops of colors with accessories, artwork and fabric such as the tablecloth. I’ve suggested some updated lighting to add more interest. Nikki describes her taste as traditional/formal and I think these lights are a mix of traditional and modern so they will provide a fresh updated look. Another detail that is like adding jewelry to an outfit is the silver knobs on the cabinetry. They dress up the cabinets as well improving function. -PEGGY VAN ALLEN
